The Frigidaire FAD251NTD 25-Pint Dehumidifier is designed to be a low cost solution to smaller areas and rooms, and the noise level isn't going to be a whisper, more like a table fan. This is an excellent choice for moving from room to room, rather than a more permanent type of situation.

Featuring mechanical controls, an easy to access water collection container with a level indicator - the Frigidaire will alert you when the bucket is full, and even shut itself off so you don't end up flooding your room with the extracted water. The washable filter means that you'll clean the air, and keep it smelling fresh.

'Portable' is its middle name, with caster wheels and handles that make it easy to move from room to room - this unit isn't really designed for a permanent large basement - but more for small to medium sized rooms - and its portability makes this easy.

This unit carries the Energy Star Seal, and this means that it's more energy efficient than those units that aren't so certified. This will save you money on your electric bill, as well as make you feel good about the environment.

Here's a review from one owner of the Frigidaire Dehumidifier:

I love this dehumidifier! Both my wife and I moved to a new apartment in Pacifica, CA literally across the street from the beach. We normally leave our windows open so it vents a bit of fresh air but the problem is that humidity enters as well with the sea breeze. It got really damp in our apartment and so bad that I felt it every time I got in the blankets. I shopped around and found this dehumidifier online and thought it would be very helpful. When it came, no joke, it was like Christmas. I tore it open with a twinkle in my eye and laughed with joy when I pulled it out. I read the instruction manual to make sure I didn't ruin anything and it was a simple 3-6 step process. I set it up in no time and plugged it in to the wall to see what this bad boy can do. Within 12 hours, this 25 Pint dehumidifier was full. It kept getting full for the next 4 days and now it is nice and dry in our 1 bedroom apartment. I really love it!

I gave it a five star because of its awesomeness and the vendors quickness in shipping. The product is amazing.

Be aware that this dehumidifier is no whisper technology machine. It is as loud as a portable fan but my wife loves it since she needs noise to help her fall asleep (drowns out our neighbors loud movie watching at 11 PM). Thanks Frigidaire, your the best!

Here's another excellent review written by another happy owner of the Frigidaire Dehumidifier:

We live in Hawaii. Our master bedroom was always feeling humid, we subsequently discovered the A/C upstairs had been leaking for a while & mold was growing. To help with the humidity upstairs & dry out the mosture from the leak, I puchased this about 2 months ago. It was simple to set up, just pull it out of the box & plug in. The first few days I had to empty it at least once a day. It is pretty simple to do. The container, made of hard plastic, is sturdy, it's basically the bottom front half of the unit that slides out. You just pull it out & pour out. Place the container back in is simple as well. The dehumidifier will automatically turn off if the container fills up with water. It's easy to maneuver from room to room because it is on wheels.

It does not have a 2-speed fan like the ad states. It's a dial (like a radio volume dial) that you turn from off to less to more dry. Obviously the more dry you want it, the more it will run.

While doing research, I read complaints of it being loud. I was expecting it to be loud but it's not. When it is in the upstairs hall, it sounds like a new front loading washer machine running from downstairs. At night, I can barely hear it in the hall. It's right outside our bedroom door, but we also sleep with a fan. Obviously, if it is right next to you, it may be too loud.

I also read complaints of it always staying on. If that is the case, that is because you have the dial set to "more dry." Just turn the dial down (it's like a radio volume dial).

I have now moved/rolled it to right outside our master bedroom bathroom since it seem like the exhaust fan doesn't do a good job of removing the moisture in the bathroom. The dehumidifier does a great job of doing that.

Sometimes it runs when I think it's not humid and sometimes it doesn't run when I think it should. But both are easy to fix with a slight turn of the dial to accomplish what I am wanting it to do, run/not run.

If you want this to be placed permanently, then you'll seriously want to consider purchasing some hose, and set this up to vent water to the nearest drain - that way you won't have to keep emptying the bucket all the time. You can find the appropriate hose for under $10, so it's not a major expense, but just something to keep in mind. If you're going to use this more for the portability of moving from room to room, then of course you don't need to worry about the hose.

This isn't the unit you want for the bathroom or even most rooms - this is a heavy duty unit that can work to keep large areas dehumidified.

The Frigidaire FAD704TDP 70-Pint Dehumidifier has the capacity to remove virtually all the moisture from rather large rooms or basements, and the noise level, while still quiet nicely quiet, is not at the 'whisper' level of less powerful units. This is the unit that you want for more semi-permanent locations... such as your basement. If you plan to move it from room to room, this isn't your best choice, you might want to look at something a tad less powerful and lighter-weight, such as the Soleus Dehumidifier.

Heavy duty dehumidifiers can easily rack up more than $150 a year in additional electricity use - so you want to pay attention to those units that can dehumidify for the lowest cost. Larger capacity units such as the FAD704TDP tend to be more efficient than lower capacity units, and dehumidifiers which carry the Energy Star Seal are even more efficient, saving another 10 to 20 percent on your electric bill. Since this unit is Energy Star rated, you can be assured that it's Environmentally friendly, and will not unnecessarily drain your electric bill.

Here's a review from one owner of the Frigidaire Dehumidifier:

I have 2 Sears 70 pint dehumidifiers for our basement. Our basement is not wet, but I don't like the dampness we can get during the summer. I would empty the units every couple of days, and when I went down the basement a few weeks ago, I noticed that the dehumidifier in the storage area was filled but the one in the bedroom was not. I thought it was just because the one area was a little damper than the other. Two days later I went to empty the unit and once again, one was full and the other was not. I switched the location of each and you guessed it, the one was DOA. I was looking at a Sears again, but their 70 pint was nearly $300. I reviewed the other dehumidifiers on the market and saw the review of the Frigidaire. I was a little skeptical of a Frigidaire (although I hadn't had any personal experience with the brand, I remembered my parents having an old Frigidaire refrigerator and not having good luck with it. Now that was 40 years ago!). But the 70 pint was under $200. I thought I would try it. Unit arrived in perfect condition and after letting it "rest" in the upright position for the recommended 1 hour, I plugged it in. The unit is VERY quiet and sucked moisture out of the air like a sponge. I put the working Sears unit in the same room, and the Frigidaire beat the Sears unit like Professional Baseball playing a fair college baseball team! I just ordered a second on to replace the working Sears unit which I am going to donate to Goodwill!

My dad kept bugging me to buy the Frigidaire, but I wanted to find something locally and get it over with (Menards and Home Depot don't carry the Frigidaire around here). Ended up buying an LG #LD650EAL dehumidifier from Home Depot but wow, was that ever a waste of time. after running it for a few hours it hadn't collected a single drop of water and it started to stink of hot electronics so took it back for a refund. Decided to see what Consumer Reports had for ratings and apparently they didn't recommend the LD650EAL because *they* had the same problem (sheesh!). Ok, so took dad's advice and ordered the FAD704TDP from Amazon. Only thing I can say is it's awesome. Much quieter than the LG (fan is about half as quiet!) and within the first 15 mins of turning it on water started dripping into the bucket. Seems to run pretty cool as well (I had an Amana that made a better space heater than dehumidifier) After 3 days of running in the basement, humidity has dropped to 50% and it's filled the bucket three days in a row. Prime Shipping brought the cost of the Frigidaire to $30 less than the LG so we saved some ching there too! Definitely recommend the Frigidaire FAD704TDP.

This is a unit that you'll seriously want to take a look at running a hose to - so you don't have to keep running down to the basement to empty the pan every day or so. So keep in mind that if you are considering a power unit like the Frigidaire FAD704TDP - you'll also want to pick up some hose! (You can get 15 feet of hose for under $10 - and never have to worry about emptying the water pan!)

Tim 'The Toolman' Taylor may disagree, but you don't always need more power... sometimes, you simply need just the right tool for the job.

While the Soleus Dehumidifier is on the lower end of the spectrum when it comes to how much 'power' it has - it's rated at only 40 Pints per day, it can quietly handle small to medium sized areas. Most people will discover that their refrigerator is noisier than the Soleus - so you can understand why some people prefer this unit to more powerful, yet noisier units. At it's lowest setting, the Soleus puts out just 41 decibels - since normal conversation is around 60-70 decibels, you can get a good idea of just how quiet the Soleus CFM-40E actually is.

Environmentalists can be happy as well - since the Soleus portable dehumidifier uses no CFC refrigerants - so you can feel happy with purchasing this unit, and maintaining our Ozone layer at the same time.

Despite the fact that I must give the Soleus a lower review based on the lower water removal specs - only 40 pints per day - this unit really should get a virtually perfect score - the combination of excellent engineering, absolutely quiet operation, and a perfect fit to smaller applications makes this unit one that you should take a close look at. As well, weighing in at just a tad over 30 pounds, it's easy to move from one room to another.

Utilizing a magnetic float, the Soleus isn't prone to 'float sticking' with mineral deposits, and with it's ability to operate down to 36 degrees allows it to operate in places where other dehumidifiers would stop working. And if you have frequent power outages, it's important to note a flaw with the Soleus, it will not turn itself back on after a power outage - so you'll have to keep an eye on it if you have frequent electrical problems.

Here's a review from one owner of the Soleus Dehumidifier:

I purchased this dehumidifier for mainly basement use, but wanted one quiet enough for use upstairs if needed. And, boy is this thing quiet. My refrigerator is louder. I also own a Fedders 45 pint unit and a Whirlpool 65 pint noise maker. The Fedders (Maytag) was the quiet champ until I purchased the Soleus Air CFM-40E. The Whirlpool removes an amazing amount of water, but can be heard UPSTAIRS when running in the basement. So it is used only when needed. The Soleus Air is so quiet I have to go down the basement stairs and visually check to see if the unit is on. Can't say that for many dehumidifiers. My only complaint is that the fan is always on, even when it has reached the set humidity level. This prevents the short cycling the others do, on for 2 minutes off for 2 minutes or so, but I think prevents an Energy Star certification. At 2.9 amps it draws significantly less than the Fedders 5.6 amps and the Whirlpool's 7.9 amps.

The Soleus Air works great (so far) upstairs in the spring, when it is cool but damp, like the weather this week. Here in Wisconsin it is in the 60's but rainy, so the house is humid. Running the central air is not necessary since the house is not hot. So I use a dehumidifier, which makes the house seem less clammy. I would recommend the Soleus Air CFM-40E to anyone who is looking for a small, really quiet, relatively light, medium capacity (40pint) dehumidifier that simply does what is supposed to do (remove water from air) with out excess noise.

*******3 Year Update******
This dehumidifier has been working flawlessly for 3 years of nearly constant use. Other than cleaning the filter and the occasional collection tank clean out, maintenance has been minimal. I still can not get over how quiet this unit is, and it has not gotten any louder with age. I highly recommend this product, yes it is not cheap, but it works really well, and is very well built. Highest possible recommendation.

WOW! I can't tell you how difficult it was for me to for me to find a quiet dehumidifier. This unit has it all. It's whisper quiet, it sucks water out of the air like a sponge, it's small, it's very nice looking and uses only 330 Watts. Tell me, what more could you ask??

I put this unit in my living room and it covers a total of 4 rooms/700SqFt perfectly.

Within a period of about 6 weeks, before I bought this unit, I tried a Frigidaire Frigidaire FDL601P 60-Pint Portable Dehumidifier and a DeLonghi DE500P Dehumidifier - 50 Pint with Condensate Pump. They were both much larger, very loud and drew twice the power of the Soleus unit.

As an engineer, I really appreciate a well designed and manufactured product. Clearly, this is one worthy of such praise. Almost all other dehumidifiers follow the same model, big, boxy, loud, and for the most part, primitive in design. The Soleus is different. Their folks sat down with a clean sheet of paper a designed a terrific product. I've had mine for 3 weeks and wouldn't want to do without it.

The Soleus Company suggests that you clean the air filter once every two weeks - this isn't difficult, particularly with a vacuum cleaner nozzle. If you intend a more permanent installation - you aren't going to be moving it around - you can put in your own hose to continuously drain the water... the hose is not included, but you can purchase one at any hardware store for a few dollars.

Frigidaire has long been known for their kitchen and home appliances, and have positioned themselves as a reliable company with good customer support. This is definitely a nice thing to have when you're speaking about dehumidifiers - as they tend to be heavily used, and as a result, you may need repair work sooner or later. While it would be nice if a dehumidifier simply worked forever, it's prudent to purchase from companies well known for their support!

The Frigidaire FAD504TDD 50-Pint Dehumidifier has the capacity to remove moisture from fairly large sized rooms or basements, although the noise is a tad louder than some of the quietest units tested, this is still a perfectly acceptable unit that comes well recommended by owners.

Here's a review from one owner of the Frigidaire Dehumidifier:

When mine arrived I found it a "snap" to unpack, to set up, and to begin the initial test run; simple to use, the unit should appeal to everyone, even those who find themselves mechanically challenged. Operation is intuitive, and if you're like me, and prefer to plug things in first and read the directions later... you will appreciate this Frigidaire dehumidifier. When you do decide to refer to the printed instructions, they are remarkably clear, concise and easy to interpret.

The unit seems lighter than the manufacturer advertised weight of 37 lbs. It's mounted on casters, and very easy to maneuver (even on carpeted floors), and the design is eye-pleasing... I would even say attractive; if you need to locate the unit in full view it is NOT distressing. I also like the fact that this dehumidifier has a float valve on the dump bucket, which shuts off the unit when the bucket is full, helping to avoid a messy over-flow. There is a "bucket-full" indicator light on top of the dehumidifier to alert the operator that it is time to empty the collected water. A word of caution however : in my experience, removing the collection bucket on any dehumidifier once "full-to-the-brim" can be tricky and usually results in some spillage. Thankfully, there is a clear window gage on the bucket that allows you to visually see how much water has accumulated in the bucket. Conceivably one could check the unit periodically, and empty the bucket before it gets "too" full. As well, there is a filter that needs to be removed every 250 hours of operation then washed and dried before re-installed. This does not seem burden-some to me. In fact, I think periodically washing the filter is a good practice : the combination of dirt and water typically encourages the formation of mold, and cleaning the filter regularly will help to prevent a "science project" from taking up residence in the dehumidifier. I do not want the air I breathe to be circulating over a dirty, moldy filter!! A light on the dehumidifier alerts you when it is time to clean the filter... "memory" is not an issue.

Within an hour of first operating the unit I could already detect some benefit from the dehumidifier; the air was discernibly dryer as moisture was being "sucked" from the air, and water began collecting in the dump-bucket! This seems to be an efficient appliance.

Regarding the operating noise... if you have a box fan turn it on to "medium-high", stand back from it six feet, and listen. This will give you an accurate sense of how loud you can expect the unit to sound when the dehumidifier fan is set to "high". Keep in mind however, the manufacturer recommends you initially run the dehumidifier continuously on "high" for the first four or five days... just until you've dried out the environment. After that, one can lower the setting, which will reduce the noise further... and presumably result in a reduction in energy consumption as well. There is also a timer on the appliance, which will allow you to set the dehumidifier to come on at night while asleep; this surely would be a good option for someone concerned about fan noise during waking hours. (The timer is handy too if you are gone from your residence for any extended period.) Subjectively, I would say the noise coming from the dehumidifier, set on "high", is not any greater than a modern, energy efficient, window-mounted air conditioning unit.

I would indeed recommend this dehumidifier to a friend !

All I can say is that this unit is amazing. Fast operation right out of the box, easy to use, easy to set up external drainage, etc. I have owned many brands of dehumidifiers in the past and I have to say this one is the best I've ever had.

This unit will reduce the humidity in a very large basement (1000+ sq ft) extremely well if placed correctly. Hooking up the hose attachment makes it easier as you do not have to watch the bucket level. I have added a second unit to give my basement even lower humidity, but for a regular (500-1000sq ft) size basement this thing would be perfect.

The bucket operation of this unit is extremely easy, it tells you when the bucket needs to be emptied with a warning LED. The one downside to using it in bucket mode is that the bucket will become moldy if you don't empty it enough. That can be fixed by adding some bleach each time you empty the bucket. When using a hose drainage you will not have to worry about that problem.

My basement has considerably less humidity and the filter cleans the air as well. I would recommend this to friends and family looking for a easy solution without upping to a stand alone A/C unit. If you're looking to lower the humidity in a basement over 2000+ sq feet like mine I would recommend buying two of these.

Simply put this dehumidifier does an amazing job at keeping things in check. For the price you cannot get a better system and I would recommend this over and over again. I have been using two of these units for two years and have had zero operational problems. Don't hesitate to buy this product!

Keep in mind that dehumidifiers are seldom 'set it and forget it' appliances... you'll have to check the water level, and empty the pan from time to time, and the filter needs cleaning too... the manual recommends cleaning the filter twice a month - and that seems reasonable to me, I don't want to be breathing air that's being cycled through a moldy filter!
